I have read many of the stories that originated in the Rhodesian Bush Battle including the " The particular Selous Scouts" writtten by their original CO Col Ron Daly- Lewis, which was earth Shattering, as far as I was concerned but this tale by Alexandra Fuller was written on such a human level that it gave a totally different angle to a similar conflict story but with so much humour and sympathy. Totally worth reading if historically true stories are your forte, I have read all of Alexandra Fuller's books so far and love them This particular one, due to more unusual wording, was a little harder to understand so it was good that the definitions were listed in the back of the book. It gives an extremely vivid picture of what life in the time of conflict was like - so sad in such a beautiful country. I was also sad to learn of the ending of Alexander's marriage - just hope she finds the happiness the girl with searching for and her children increase up to be as talented as the girl with., I actually ordered this audiobook because I like the viewer, Lisette LeCat. She does a wonderful job reading the No . 1 Ladies' Detective novels, and I actually wanted to get more of her work to listen to. She does a lovely job with this novel as well. The story line of the novel is a bit harsh as compared with the Ladies' Detective novels, but this is a true story and that's life!: D, Alexandra Fuller is a great writer. This is the second book that I actually have read written by her, The first is Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight and am was enjoying learning about Rhodesia, it's struggles, cultures, rebellions which is something That i knew of little about before. The focus is about a many other Rhodesian described as E who is experiencing his demons from as being a soldier in the rebellions., Amusing writer, interesting life history., Just love her writing style, very enjoyable! She captures and presents a clear image of the people she encounters in a way that makes you easily understand the day to day pain and suffering of being a veteran of wars that required the madness of all the disgusting things man does to each other. She also offers the ready a rofl inside the craziness of being a white African back in the 20th/21st century., It's like trying to eat spoons. Desperation. Every way to skin a cat... a live cat... And you thought herding them was hard. I'd rather drink vaseline until I perish than read more books by this author., I actually read this book almost two years after reading this author's first book, "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight" which was one of my all time favorite books. I actually don't believe Ms. Fuller's intent was for this book to be obtained as literally as being a viewers appear to taking it. Don't look for flaws in facts. She intentionally said she was "covering her tracks" like "any good soldier" would do. I loved this guide almost as much as her first book. That claims a lot. She is a wonderful writer. Her marriage is her own business to those reviewers who blame her for not discussing it more in this guide. Obviously anyone concerned about her marriage or the factual flaws do not get the reason for this book. This guide is not meant to provide answers. Instead, it simply propounds more questions for someone to consider. Authors that imply that they have all the answers bore me to no end. Perhaps that's why I really like Ms. Fuller's writing so much. She has no such egotistical pretense in her writing. Instead, this book is about much, much more than the seemingly dry subject matter of traveling through various parts of Africa with an ex-soldier. This guide is about "Life, Death, Love, Hate and God" among other even less real things. I loved it and will read it again. Thank you again, Ms. Fuller, for another wonderful book with regards to your experience in Africa. We appear to share some experience of moving into a place that will not make often make sense or fit into other person's scope of reality. Your writing sometimes reminds me of what it's like to stay in the Virgin Islands, a subject I really hope to write about one day as eloquently as you write about Africa.
