This journal is a fantastic little read from a young girl (16) during the revolutionary war. This is simply her account associated with day to day occurances. Very interesting to listen to associated with some of the " goings on" during that time from your young girl and some of the woman feelings toward the conflict, officers etc.... great small book!, Was a diary - not the whole story., I enjoyed reading about young Miss Wister's activities during the conflict. Sadly, it absolutely was only a small, tantalizing glimpse. Wister is a lively creating, with an eye for the men and women around the woman and a knack for capturing the best components of her experiences. I desire there was more to the woman journal, or her life. According to Wikipedia, she lived in her father’s house until her death as an old female and not married. Given the woman regular reassurance to the woman audience that her temperature was unmoved by the dashing gentlemen officers she met, this does not surprise me. In the end, I recommend this guide as a great resource for anyone studying the Revolutionary War, particularly how women and the general people faced it. This would certainly be a great book for kids, age 11+, I actually think.,... Sally Wister was obviously a 16-year-old Quaker maiden once the British, who had already overtaken New York, endangered Philadelphia. Her family remaining the city for your safety associated with the farm of Bill & Hannah Foulke ("Aunt" Foulke), some 15 miles from the city, in the countryside of Gwynedd, Pa.
From September 1777 to July 1778, she kept a diary to tell her good friend Debby everything that happened, as the American Military marched by as well as the English invaded their encampment 6th miles away, and she offered descriptions from headquarters, in order to camps, to social events.
During individuals months, the British grabbed Philadelphia, battles and skirmishes were held, Burgoyne surrendered, General Washington entrenched at Whitemarsh, and then encamped for your winter at Pit Forge, a cabal went up against Washington, France acknowledged American independence, and, ultimately, the British withdrew.
This girl, at once a proper Quaker maiden and an enthralled teenager, met with (and fancied) Continental officers, managed General Smallwood, visited the Americans' camps, and revealed us real examples associated with the fears of conflict, when brought to your own door. (The Quakers had been sympathetic towards the cause associated with the revolution, but carefully anti-war. )
This is a great resource -- reading like a novel, yet a real, historical autobiography, a primary source, showing the human side of the United states Revolution, as the conflict swirled around her. Created in the language plus spelling of the time, it supplies a fresh plus essential look at the War.
Another edition, the Library-Binding republication of the 1902 edition, offers a great Introduction by simply Albert Cook Meyers, putting all the events inside context and giving the Wister and Foulke loved ones backgrounds., Sally Wister had been a 16-year-old Quaker first when the British, that had already overtaken Ny, threatened Philadelphia. Her loved ones left the city for the safety of the farm of William & Hannah Foulke ("Aunt" Foulke), several 15 miles from the city, in the country of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania.

The 1902 distribution of the book gives a great Introduction by Albert Cook Meyers., In 1775 the British invaded Philadelphia and Sally Wister, a new Quaker, was sent into the countryside to protect the woman from harm. While the majority of it deals with the woman stay in the nation plus her interaction with representatives of the American Military, it is also displays the fears, dreams plus hopes of any girl during the time of the Revolutionary War. True, becoming a Quaker she actually is in opposition to war and this creates a interesting first person viewpoint. A must for any library on early on American history, women's history and the American Wave., This is an interesting journal. I live close to places Sally writes regarding in her journal. It would have been excellent if an editor got provided some background info on the place, time and person.
