I possess owned this book given that March 2004, when a couple of great friends brought me back an autographed copy off their attendance at the particular Author's reading/ signing. We did not read that until my book membership selected it last 30 days.

Though it is a new little slow to begin, We found myself unable in order to put it down as We reached the very last 1/3 of the book. I possess read almost all of the books she discussed and felt like the particular beginning was a tiny like reading published papers. But... when she began to discuss her own life as well as the lives of the women she taught in Tehran is when she had me hooked. I began to understand her need to be real to herself despite ideologies that were forced upon her. I felt motivated by her drive, however saddened by the clampdown, dominance she felt by getting forced to cover (rather compared to choosing it as modesty and honor for God) and made to censor.

Through my highschool years 1985-88, I had a pencil pal from Tehran via my Spanish class. At that time, I had NO IDEA that throughout our exchange of crossword puzzles, article cards, letters, stamps and the funny papers that he was experiencing the particular things that Ms. Nafisi describes. We were kids, we only talked about pop culture. Reading this article got me back to my reference to him. As a good adult, now watching the particular news of current occasions in Iran I am so saddened. I hope he will be safe and a great man. Having been a great teenage friend for an oblivious teenage girl.

With Iran is the news, this is a perfect time to read this book and understand why there is this kind of unrest today with thier election.

Some have said that the author is narcissistic. To that particular I say... that is a memoir. It truly is supposed to be almost all about her., The demonstration of the book is unique, but it didn't cease me from being apathetic in a lot of the book. Right now there were some key estimates that helped keep me awake, but I more than likely read it again when it had been erased from my memory., Is actually the easiest way that one can describe the scenario that folks are below, in Iran. As a good Iranian, it's really hard regarding me to make clear this case to the kinds who else haven't been in that. But definitely, there are usually lots of people who has see the books mentioned within this book, and experienced the feels that writers wanted them to feel. So comparing Iran with the particular circumstances in that books is one of the best ways that I can imagine, to identify the condition that Iranians are experiencing. However , I' talked with some other Iranians who have not been in Iran at almost all, or not much, and they've said that they didn't feel that much of sympathy with the particular characters in the book. I can say that We really felt what was heading on on the book, in spite of that I'm not a girl. On the particular other hand, as the particular author says, there's a new high probability that the one who has read such as Lolita, give the correct to Humbert, not Lolita. And this may improve the risk that folks who else has not been within Iran, think that, Because like because their interpretation of the novel, Iranians doesn't have right and the particular thing that government will be doing is completely correct. Yet there's also a possibility that after reading this particular book, the same kinds appearance back and seem like that they want to modify their mind about that novels. They might think that Lolita was the good figure, not Humbert.

Overall, the particular context of the book, was full of "hard" phrases for me, and given that I'm not a native (I've read English novels yet not that much) that was hard for me to follow the story, together with a normal speed. Upon the other hand, there were a big amount of Persian "expression"s which were straight translated to English, and ironically they made an ideal sense., Wow. Wasn't sure whether I was studying an excellent work of books or an obscure repartee on ideals. Quite a new few things triggered this particular feeling.

First there is the particular Author's Note. Normally We don't read them. Yet this one was brief... so I did, which between reminding myself of the caption "a memoir in books" and weighing in the fact that "... aspects of figures and events in this particular story are actually changed... inches (& understandably so) that did little to help separate the ambiguity in between events and perspectives... specially since on top of all things, Nafisi teaches books.

But I took upon the challenge, and enjoyed it. Irony after irony. It really was beautiful... tell-tale... such as the glimmering irony in the Reading of Lolita... particularly noting wherever Humbert `is painted' to be both narrator and seducer... of not only Lolita, but also of his readers. We type of felt the exact same way about Nafisi. Without having going too deep in to the revolution of ideals and basic human rights which much of this guide encompasses... and I believe in... but regardless of an individual's viewpoint, regardless of whether left or right... open-handed or conservative, you need to seduce to get other folks to see your level of view. Perception can be a tricky creature...

... for instance, another question I had (initially) had been what possibly `could' Nafisi teach about literature (of all subjects), in Tehran? I got my answer. Yet the very reason We had the question in order to get started with was because of the way I had been seduced from the stories of oppression.

These questions/ironies only makes Reading Lolita within Tehran not just engaging, yet projects what Nafisi strived to accomplish all alongside... to revive and retain alive literature!
