Rinker Buck and his sibling got to live the desire of many a background buff and in accomplishing this wrote a history/travel book that is very pleasurable to read. In doing so he got the chance to find out about life, think back to times with his family and make the history and experience of the Oregon Trail come alive.

This could have been two books. It could have been a background of the Oregon Trek. I learned a lot by what the settlers who traveled on the Or Trail faced daily. That could recently been a travel book talking about how exactly two brothers learned a lot about the world and on their own while traveling the Or Trail The author really does an remarkable job of merging these two publications as one and in doing so creating a work that I read in three sittings. I actually would not want to put this down.

This book is a rare sort of excellent writing combined with an amazing story about a recreated journey from the past. There have been quite a few of books written by people who have recreated travels made by explorers in the past. There are tv set shows where people live like people do in the past. A large number of fail because they get caught up in the “gimmick” of modern people living in the past.

Even though the premise of this book is the fact two modern men take and old wagon and about three mules on the Or Trail, the finish result is so much more. What makes this book different is mcdougal is an exceptionally good writer who knows how to write about history as well his journey and I wound up caring both about the history and the journey., I loved this book! Buck has an exceptional voice and personality, and even though I disagree with plenty of his personal views and other assessments, I enjoyed his take on life when he entered the Oregon Trail. I've always been fascinated by the trail, and I savored every page. " I believe in crazyass passion... My corporeal self would be driving kilometers across the plains, but it was crazyass enthusiasm that would deliver myself to the trail. " I'm delighted that enthusiasm did indeed deliver Dollar to the trail and that, through his book, he took me along for the ride., I'd observed about the Oregon Trek, but didn't really know much about it. I purchased this book at the suggestion of a friend. There are several books on the subject, old and newer. This one is current and informative, enjoyable and a picture of the changes in the trail which was in its height in the 1840's. Obviously, Buck and his brother had very different problems than the original pioneers. That's why Choice to first read a first hand experience written by Francis Parkman in around 1845. I'm glad I did and I'd suggest that to anyone reading this recent account. Both old and new publications are easy reads and excellent glimpses into an important part of American history. The particular newer book however might attract a man or someone more into the technicalities of wagon structure, mule harnesses, and so forth, but this doesn't take away from the relationships of men and women on the trail or those of the two friends.

Both good reads!, Rinker (the author) and his brother decided on a whim to build a covered wagon, get a set of mules to pull it, and head out on the Oregon Trail. They started In Missouri and travelled through Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon to get there - over 2000 miles. They fundamentally traced the route the settlers took, over 4 hundred, 000 of those made the trip in the center of the 1800's.
The book consists of several things - the story of the trip I great detail, ruminations about Rinker's father and how he made him who he was, and passages about the Western. These included, among others, information about the importance of mules, how the wagon business prospered because of this of the Trail, the impact of the trail on the Native American populace, and exactly how the Mormons (LDS) influenced the trail and its history.
In the beginning the sheer amount of information is a little off-putting. Following the first few chapters are complete it kind of becomes part of the scenery and blends in. Additionally he and his brother become humanized and there is often a warm feeling present.
They actually do make it after moving through many hair-raising adventures. Just about all of those are informed with a breathless spirit that adds to the interest. If you have the in the Western and how it came to be, you will enjoy this wonderful book., Loved this book and the 2 character types and the dog that took the Oregon path in a covered wagon and a team of three mules. The vocabulary was a little offensive, at times, from brother but easily ignored by myself; seems it was just his character I was disappointed when the book came to The Finish and was emotionally relocated (for them??? ). Suggest from a historical standpoint or if you are simply considering a team of mules and how they performed within this long trip.
